Challenge
Switchii grew from profile discovery into a web and mobile product with detailed profiles, location-aware discovery, matching, messaging and real-time calls. The challenge was keeping those capabilities consistent across both platforms.
Strategy
I organized the application around shared domains — authentication, profiles, discovery, matching and communication — backed by a common data model.
Design Approach
Tamagui provides a shared design foundation across web and mobile, while React Native and Next.js retain interaction patterns appropriate to each platform.
Implementation
React Native and Expo power mobile, with Next.js on the web. Supabase provides authentication, PostgreSQL, storage, realtime and RLS; Agora.io handles audio/video calls and OneSignal provides push notifications.
Switchii began as a profile-discovery concept and gradually expanded into a broader web and mobile product. Profiles became more structured, discovery became location-aware, and likes developed into matching, messaging and real-time audio and video communication.
Building those capabilities across two platforms required deciding carefully what should be shared and what should remain platform-specific. Authentication, profiles, discovery, matching and communication use common backend domains, while web and mobile retain navigation and interaction patterns suited to each platform.
The project also changed how I think about architecture. Some early iterations introduced abstraction before it was needed, so I later simplified parts of the system and became more deliberate about where shared infrastructure adds real value. Architecture should earn its complexity.
